It is very important to read product labels to know the chemical content and heed any warnings regarding proper usage. This page is designed to help you properly dispose of anything and everything. There are over 350 items listed alphabetically. Just click on the letter your item begins with and scroll down from there. A

Acid

This is a hazardous material and may be brought to the SISWD processing center at JPG north of Madison at any time.  SISWD sponsors special collections at our satellite centers on the first or second Saturday of each quarter.

Adhesives

These are hazardous materials and may be brought to the SISWD processing center at any time to the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison.  SISWD sponsors special collections at our satellite centers on the first or second Saturday of each quarter.
 

Aerosol Cans

When containers still have product in them or are still under pressure, most are considered hazardous waste and should be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or dropped off at one of the SISWD during special collections.   If they contained food-related products or are empty, they should be disposed of in the garbage.

Agricultural Plastic

Agricultural plastic cannot be recycled; please dispose of it in the garbage. Burning agricultural plastic is illegal. Burning plastic releases toxic chemicals into the air.

Air Conditioners

Accepted at SISWD recycling centers.

Alkaline Batteries (Duracell, Eveready, Energizer, etc.)

These are not hazardous, and may be disposed of in the garbage.

All-Purpose Cleaner

This is a hazardous material in its concentrated form. Dilute and use or bring to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or to your county recycing center during special collections of household hazardous waste.
 

Aluminum Cans

Accepted for curbside recycling and at all SISWD Centers. Please rinse out any remaining liquid or food from the cans. Check your Yellow Pages for scrap metal dealers who may be willing to accept your cans for payment.

Aluminum Siding

Aluminum siding can be recycled at most metal recycling businesses. Do not put in recycling bins. If still usable, consider donating to Habitat for Humanity or your SISWD reuse center.

Ammonia

This is considered to be household hazardous waste and mayt be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or to your county recycling center during special collection days.
 

Ammunition

Contact your local law enforcement agency for information.

Answering Machines

These may be brought to any SISWD center.

Antifreeze

Recyclable at any SISWD recycling center.

Ant Poison

This is a hazardous material and may be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison, or to your county recycling centter during special collection days.
 

Appliances (sometimes referred to as 'white goods')

Air Conditioner, Dehumidifier, Dishwasher, Dryer, Freezer, Hot Tub, Microwave, Refrigerator, Stove, Trash Compactor, Washer, Water Heater, may be brought to all SISWD centers. Check with your local scrap metal recycler for other options.

Area Rugs

First, if there is any wear left in the rug, consider finding someone who could use it. Avoiding the landfill or transfer station is generally a good thing, but it may be your only option.

Arm Chair

If furniture is in good condition, donate it to a local charitable organization. SISWD reuse centers cannot accept upholstered furniture. Check with your local trash hauler for other options.

Art & Hobby Paint

If the paint can be cleaned up with water, let it dry out and dispose of in regular trash. If paint thinners or solvents are necessary for clean up, then this is a hazardous material and must be taken to SISWD recycling centers.

Arts & Crafts Supplies

Check with your local schools, youth organizations, or Sunday school classes to find out if they are interested in a donation of used or leftover art supplies in good condition. Items not suitable for donation may be garbage (for instance, a worn-out paintbrush). Oil based products must be taken to SISWD recycling centers.

Asbestos

Requires special handling by certified contractors.

Ashes

Ashes are not recyclable, but may be placed in the garbage once they are stone cold!

Asphalt

Asphalt is considered a bulky waste item for the landfill.

Asphalt Sealer

If the asphalt sealer is latex-based (you can clean up with water), it must be dried out and then disposed with your trash. If it is not latex-based, it is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison, or to your county recycling center during special collection days.
 
Asphalt Shingles

May require special handling by a certified contractor.  Check with your local transfer station or trash handler.

Automobiles

Salvage businesses.

    Bags

    Paper: Accepted by curbside recycling programs and at all SISWD Centers.
    Plastic: Check with local supermarkets for recycling programs. They can be reused (for instance, as trash liners for small trash bins); Also accepted at all SISWD centers.
     

    Bakeware (cookie trays, baking pans, Pyrex)

    If still in good condition, bakeware may be donated to local charities (such as Goodwill or Salvation Army, your SISWD Re-use Center, or offered at a tag sale. Bakeware in any condition is unfortunately not recyclable.

    Ballast (from fluorescent light)

    This is a hazardous material (mercury) and must be taken to the your county recycling  center.

    Barbecue Grill

    This belongs in the heavy trash pickup or landfill.

    Barbecue Tank

    Disposal of small LP tanks is available to all District residents at SISWD recycling centers.

    Bathroom Cleaner

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collection days in your county. 
     

    Bathtub, Cast-Iron or other metal

    Contact a metal recycler or place for heavy trash pickup. There are also salvage companies that will buy certain styles. Alternatively, you might offer it for re-use by local charitable organizations.

    Bathtub, Fiberglass or Plastic

    This belongs in heavy trash pickup.

    Batteries

     

    • Alkaline (Household AAA, AA, C, D,9-volt, etc) -

        These are not hazardous, and may be disposed of in the garbage. Some manufacturers place a pine tree symbol on those that can be trashed.
    • Automobile -

        Automobile batteries may be taken to SISWD recycling centers. Ideally, these batteries should be exchanged when buying a replacement.
    • Button -

        Button batteries should not be thrown away. Accepted at SISWD recycling centers.
    • Lithium (Li-ion) -

        These batteries are typically found in digital cameras and laptop computers,and should not be throw away. Accepted at SISWD recycling centers.
    • Rechargeable (NiCad) -

        NiCad batteries should not be throw away. Accepted at SISWD recycling centers.
    • Sealed Lead Acid -

        Small sealed lead acid batteries found in computers , electronic equipment and children's toys can be recycled at SISWD recycling centers
    • Zinc Batteries -

        Should be recycled where batteries are accepted.

     

    Beverage Containers

    Beverage containers are accepted for curbside collection and at all SISWD recycling centers. Rinse containers and remove lids before recycling.

    Bikes (scrap metal)

    This is an item for heavy trash pickup or possibly a metal recycler. Bicycles in good working order should be donated to a local charitable organization.

    Biodiesel -

    accepted at SISWD processing center in Madison or during special quarterly collections in your county.

    Birds, dead

    Report to your town's Board of Health.

    Blacktop (Asphalt)

    Asphalt is considered a bulky waste item and belongs in the landfill.

    Blueprint Paper

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

    Bookcase

    Consider finding someone who could use it, advertise it locally, or put it in a yard sale, donate to Goodwill, etc. Avoiding the landfill is generally a good thing. Often accepted by trash haulers by request.

    Books

    Hardcover and Paperback: donate to SISWD Re-use Centers or to a charitable organization. Every effort is made to rescue books and keep them in circulation.

    Bottles

    Empty antifreeze, bleach, chemical, motor oil, and any other container that held hazardous materials are not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage. Empty cooking oil, glass (clear, green & brown), laundry detergent, plastic bottles that contained shampoo, soap, soda, water can be recycled. Place with curbside recycling or bring to your local SISWD recycling center.

    Bowls (metal, glass, ceramic, or plastic)

    If still in good condition, bowls may be donated to local charities such as Goodwill or Salvation Army, SISWD Reuse Centers, or offered at a tag sale. Bowls and dishes in any condition are unfortunately not recyclable.

    Box Springs

    This is an item for heavy trash pickup. Contact your trash hauler for information.

    Boxboard

    Boxboard refers to "flat" (uncorrugated) cardboard such as cereal boxes. Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers. Take time to flatten the box please.

    Brake Fluid

    This is a hazardous material and may be brought to your local SISWD recycling center during special quarterly collections

    Branches (trees and bushes)

    Ideal for composting. Check with your local compost processor, garden clubs, or trash hauler. Your community may offer compost collection.

    Bricks

    Bricks are considered a bulky waste item and go in the landfill or for someone wanting clean fill items. In good condition, brinks are often used by landscapers and gardeners. Set out with a sign offering them to someone who needs them.

    Broken Glass

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage. This includes mirrors, too. This type of glass is tempered and not recyclable.

    Brown Envelopes

    May be recycled curbside or taken to SISWD recycling centers.

    Brush (weeds, branches, sticks, bushes)

    Bubble Wrap

    If you know someone who does a lot of selling on eBay he or she may be glad to take it for reuse. Also, check with your local packing/shipping store. Otherwise, it is not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage...after popping, of course.

    Buckets

    Metal buckets and Plastic buckets: scrap dealers may accept metal buckets; plastic buckets are not recyclable and must be throw in trash.

    Bug Spray

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections in your county. 
     

    Building & Remodeling and Construction Materials

    • Construction & Demolition Debris

        Asphalt, Asphalt Shingles, Bricks, Cement, Cinder Blocks, Clapboard, Concrete, Doors, Flooring, Insulation, Lumber, Mortar, Plaster, Plywood, Roofing, Sheetrock, Shingles, Tiles, Windows, and Wood all belong in the landfill. Unfortunately, no one in this area at this time is recycling construction and demolition debris. Some building materials in good, re-usable condition may be donated to Habitat for Humanity.
    • Polyurethane, Stains, Paint, and other Floor & Deck Finishes (oil-based only)

        This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections in your county. 
    • Roofing Tar, Oil-based Asphalt Sealer

        This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison. Please call 812-574-4080 to schedule a drop-off time.

    Canning Jars

    Canning jars are not recyclable because of the thickness of the glass. Reuse is best. Give to a friend who can use them, put in a tag sale, or place in the garbage.

    Cans (Steel [tin-coated] and Aluminum)

    Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers. Rinse before recycling. Labels do not have to be removed. You may wish to sell these items to a scrap metal dealer. Check your Yellow Pages.

    Carbon Monoxide Detector

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

    Carbon Paper

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

    Carburetor Cleaner

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD recycling center.  

    Cardboard (corrugated and boxboard)

    Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers. The following types of cardboard are not recyclable: beer or soda cartons (because of the moisture barrier in the cardboard); egg cartons (because the paper fibers are too short to be recycled); pizza boxes (because of grease); and waxed cardboard (because of the coating).

    Cardboard Tubes from Paper Towel and Toilet Paper Rolls

    Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers. Consider donating to youth/senior organizations for art projects.

    Carpeting & Rugs (Area Rugs, Carpet with or without padding)

    Heavy trash pick-up items.

    Cassette Tapes and Cassette Tape Boxes

    These cannot be recycled locally. www.GreenDisk.com offers a mail-in option for recycling all forms of electronic media and their cases: diskettes, zip disks, CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs et al, video tape, audio tape, game cartridges, DAT, DLT, Beta or Digibeta, and virtually all other type of computer tapes, as well as many other forms of "techno-trash."     Catalogs & Magazines

    Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers.

    CCA-Treated Wood (pressure-treated)

    CCA-treated wood should only be disposed of in a lined landfill, not an incinerator. Do not dispose of CCA-treated wood in a backyard compost pile, brush pile, chipping pile, or burn pile.

    CDs and CD Trays

    These cannot be recycled locally.     Cereal Boxes

    Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers. Take time to flatten the box please. Remove any inner bag and dispose in the garbage. The bag is not recyclable.

    Charcoal

    Charcoal may be placed in the garbage once it is stone cold!

    Chemistry Kit

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD Processing Center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison.or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD recycling centers.  

    Chinaware

    If still in good condition, chinaware may be donated to local charities or reuse shops, rummage sales, or offered at a tag sale. Chinaware in any condition is unfortunately not recyclable.

    Chlorine Bleach

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD recycling centers.  Empty bleach bottles cannot be recycled.

    Cigarette Lighters

    Disposable lighters may be placed in the garbage.

    Cinder Blocks

    Landfill item.

    Clapboards

    Landfill item.

    Cleaners

    All-Purpose Cleaner, Ammonia, Bathroom Cleaner, Chlorine Bleach, Disinfectant, Drain Cleaner, Oven Cleaner, Toilet Bowl Cleaner, Upholstery Cleaner, Septic Tank Cleaner--All of these are considered household hazardous waste and must be disposed of at the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD recycling centers.  It is important not to pour these chemicals down the drain all at once in their undiluted form because they have been known to have adverse effects in septic systems and at wastewater treatment plants. They can also contaminate groundwater and drinking water. It is unsafe to dispose of them in the garbage because they can be harmful to sanitation workers.

    Clothing

    Charitable organizations (Salvation Army, Goodwill, local churches, SISWD re-use centers) often take usable clothing. Clothing that is not appropriate for reuse (torn, stained) can be used as rags.

    Coal Ash

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage after it is cold.

    Coat Hangers

    Metal hangers may be accepted by scrap dealers. Check your Yellow Pages. Plastic hangers are accepted in designated bins in Wal-Mart stores.

    Colored Glass Bottles
     

    Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers. Please remove caps and rinse bottles before recycling.
     

    Compact Disks and Compact Disk Trays.
     

    These cannot be recycled locally.     Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

    Compact fluorescents cannot be placed in the trash because they contain a small amount of mercury. Please take to your local SISWD recycling center.

    Construction paper is not recyclable, because the fibers are too short. It must be placed in the garbage or donated for reuse.

    Cooking Oil

    This oil can be recycled for use as fuel for certain automobiles. Check freecycle.org to see if someone in your county is collecting it for this use. Otherwise, it must be placed in the garbage.

    Cooking Oil Bottle (empty)

    Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers.
     

    Cookware.

    If still in good condition, cookware may be donated to local charities or SISWD reuse centers, yard sales, or offered at a tag sale. Cookware in any condition is unfortunately not recyclable.

    Copy Machine

    Bring to SISWD recycle centers.

    Copy Paper

    Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers.

    Copy Paper Wrapper

    Recycle if wrapper is paper; however, most wrappers for copy paper are not accepted for paper recycling, due to the plastic moisture barrier that coats the wrapper. Plastic wrappers for copy paper are not accepted in plastics recycling.

    Couch

    Heavy trash pick up.

    Creosote (from woodstoves)

    Creosote cleaned out from woodstoves must be placed in the trash.

    Creosote Sealer

    Hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison.or save for special quarterly collections at SISWD recycling centers.  .

    Cups

    Cups -- whether paper, plastic, styrofoam, or china -- are not recyclable.

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers. 
     

    Dirt

     

    Dirt can be placed in a compost pile, yard, or garden plot. If you have contaminated dirt, contact Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

    Dishes/Dishware

    If still in good condition, dishes may be donated to local charities or SISWD reuse centers, or offered at a tag sale. Dishes in any condition are unfortunately not recyclable.

    Dishwasher

    Contact your local scrap metal dealer for options or bring to SISWD recycling centers.

    Disinfectant

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarlerly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Disposable Dishes & Utensils

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

    Disposable Food Containers (Lunchables, etc)

    Not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

    Doors

    If the doors are in good, re-usable condition, they may be donated to Habitat for Humanity, put out in a garage sale, etc. or left for heavy trash or landfill.

    Drain Cleaner

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison.or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.
     

    Drinking Glasses

     

    Not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage or donated.

    Dry Cleaning Bags

    Recycle with other plastic bags at your local grocer or bring to SISWD recycling centers.

    Dryer

    Accepted at local scrap metal dealers and at SISWD recycling centers.

    DVDs

    These cannot be recycled locally.     Envelopes

     

    Even with stamps and plastic windows, envelopes are accepted. Place with curbside recycling or at SISWD recycling centers.

    Epoxy

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers. 

    Explosives

    Contact local law enforcement.

    Eyeglasses

    Collected at optometrist offices in the District for distribution by Lions Clubs. Otherwise, they are unfortunately not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

    Fire Extinguisher

    To dispose of a fire extinguisher, first discharge its contents, and then remove the valve. Do not place in the trash or recycling! Check with Fire Dept.

    Flags

    For proper disposal of U.S. flags that are no longer in usable condition, contact your local American Legion or VFW post.

    Flammable Liquids

    These are hazardous materials and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Flea Killer/Flea Shampoo

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers. 

    Flooring

    If not fit for reuse, heavy trash pick up or landfill.

    Fluorescent Bulbs, including compact fluorescent lights

    These contain mercury and must be brought to the SISWD recycling Centers. Be careful not to break. Do not put in regular trash.

    Food

    Compost in your backyard or place in the garbage.

    Freezers

    Accepted at SISWD recycling centers.

    Freon

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Fungicide

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quartlery collections at SISWD county recycling centers. 

    Furniture

    Glass

    Since glass does not degrade, a bottle thrown in a landfill today would still be around in the year 3000. That's why it's so important to recycle any glass food or beverage container. In addition to saving landfill space, recycling saves energy. For example, recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours. Any clear, green, or brown glass bottle which held a food or beverage can be recycled. Empty and rinse; discard caps in trash. Labels and neck rings are okay, as they can be sorted out at the recycling facility. There are other glass items that unfortunately cannot be recycled.

    Automotive grease: hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers. Cooking grease should be placed in the garbage.

    Greeting Cards

    Place with curbside recycling or bring to SISWD recycling centers. Consider donating to youth/senior organizations for art projects.

    Grocery Bags

    Paper: Accepted by curbside recycling and all SISWD recycling centers.
    Plastic: Check with local supermarkets for recycling programs. They can be reused as trash liners for small trash bins. Also accepted at all SISWD recycling centers.
     

    Guns

    Contact local law enforcement.

    Gypsum (Sheetrock)

    Must be discarded. A local farmer may need it for spreading on fallow fields.

Items marked Caution, Caustic, Corrosive, Danger, Flammable, Poison, Volatile, or Warning should be considered hazardous products. Free disposal of these items is available at SISWD's processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers..  Any product that is not labeled as above can be disposed of in the trash. Empty liquids prior to placing containers in the trash. Some plastic bottles, such as those that contained rubbing alchohol and hydrogen peroxide, can be recycled.

    Hearing Aids

    Remove and recycle battery at local SISWD recycling centers. Dispose of the hearing aid itself in the garbage.

    Helium Tanks

    Disposal is available to all District residents at local SISWD recycling centers.

    Herbicide

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD recycling centers.  

    HID Lights (Sodium, Mercury, Metal Halide)

    These contain hazardous materials and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers. Be careful not to break.

    Hot Tub

    Landfill.

    Hypodermic Needles

    Hypodermic needles should not be placed in the trash or recycling. Store in heavy plastic bottle such as a laundry detergent bottle if red biohazard containers are not available. Each SISWD county offers collection sites for these items. Contact your local health department for disposal recommendations.

    Ink cartridges are usually accepted back at a retail store (e.g. Staples). Often you will receive a discount on your next ink cartridge purchase.     Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage. Kitty litter should not be composted. Kitty litter is good to absorb and dry out latex paint and then thrown in the trash.

    Kitty Litter Buckets

    Plastic buckets and pails that contained kitty litter are not recyclable and must be placed in the trash. Clean buckets should be offered for reuse.

    "Kleenex"

    Facial tissues (Kleenex or any other brand) are not recyclable and must be placed in the trash.

    Latex Paint

    Latex paint can be cleaned up with water. Read the label if you aren't sure. Water will be listed as the first ingredient. Latex paint is not a hazardous waste. It can be disposed of in the regular garbage once the paint is dry. Paint will air dry if the lid is left off the can. However, if there is a large quantity remaining in the can, it will require a very long time to dry. You can speed up the process by stirring in clean kitty litter or pouring in shallow cardboard box. Not accepted at SISWD recycling centers.

    Laundry Detergent Boxes

    Accepted at SISWD recycling centers and by curbside recycling.

    Lawn Mowers (Riding & Push)

    Before disposing of any lawn mower, remove the gas and oil. Disposal of gas and oil is available to all District residents at SISWD recycling centers. The mower itself can be considered scrap metal and can be taken to a metal recycler or to SISWD centers.

    Lead & Oil Based Paints

    These are hazardous materials and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Lead Paint Chips

    Leaves/Yard Waste

     

    Leaves and yard waste are banned from burning or placing in the trash. Please compost yard waste if possible. Some communities offer compost pickup. Mulching mowers can help get rid of the leaves and add nutrition to your lawn.

    Lighting

    Fluorescent Bulbs, including compact fluorescent lights contain mercury are accepted at local SISWD recycling centers. Do not break.

    Light Bulbs (incandescent, non-fluorescent)

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

    Lighter Fluid

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD recycling centers. 

    Linseed Oil

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers. 

    Lithium-Ion Batteries

    These batteries are typically found in digital cameras and laptop computers. They are a hazardous material. Accepted at SISWD recycling centers. Do not throw away.

    Lumber

    Many would welcome clean, reusable lumber. You might check with Habitat for Humanity, post a notice on a public bulletin board, or advertise it locally. Check with your trash hauler for options.

    Margarine Tubs

    If clean, accepted at some SISWD recycling centers. Some centers accept only # 1 and # 2 plastics. Check the bottom of the container for the number and look in locations for the rules in your county. Place lids in the regular trash.

    Mattresses (all types)

    Heavy trash pick-up.

    Medical & Infectious Waste

    Each county has an assigned drop-off location for unused/expired medications and used syringes. Check with your local health department, pharmacy or physician to determine where to take these items.  There is a rule that unused 'controlled substances,' or narcotics, must be disposed of by law enforcement, so be sure to check with your local police or sheriff.

    Do not flush medications down the drain or toilet or throw in the trash. 
     

    Mercury (liquid), Mercury-Containing Devices, Mercury Thermometers & Thermostats

     

    Mercury is toxic and should not be thrown out in the trash! Elemental mercury is a silvery liquid that is commonly used in thermometers and thermostats. Mercury is not hazardous to humans when it is in a sealed device. The danger to health and the environment arises when mercury-containing articles are broken and discarded in the trash. (Or broken after being discarded in the trash.) If you have liquid mercury, it must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Metal

    Steel and aluminum are the major metals in our everyday lives and both are easily recyclable. Recycling one aluminum can saves the energy equivalent of one cup of gasoline. There are 16 cups to a gallon. So, recycling eight 24-packs of soda would be the energy equivalent of filling a 12-gallon gas tank! To recycle beverage cans or food cans, simply rinse them and place for curbside recycling or take to your SISWD recycling center. Scrap dealers accept these metals also.

    Metal Polish

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center at the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Microwaves

    Microwaves are accepted at your SISWD recycling center.

    Milk Cartons

    Plastic milk cartons are accepted for curbside recycling and by SISWD recycling centers. Discard plastic caps in the garbage. If this is a waxed paper carton, place in garbage.

    Mineral Oil

    Landline phones and cell phones are accepted at all SISWD recycling centers.

    Television Sets

    The tubes contain at least four pounds of lead and other toxic materials. Accepted at all SISWD recycling centers for a nominal charge.

    Textiles

    Charitable organizations (Salvation Army, Goodwill, local churches) and SISWD Reuse centers often take usable clothing. Clothing that is not appropriate for reuse (torn, stained) can be used as rags.

    Thermometers & Thermostats

    Mercury is a silvery liquid. If you have a thermometer with mercury in it, bring to the SISWD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or save for special quarterly collections at SISWD recycling centers. If the thermometer has red or blue liquid, it does not contain mercury and may be put in the trash. Thermostats are also accepted.

    Tiles

    Toilet Bowl Cleaner

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Toilet Paper

    Toilet paper is not recyclable. However, the cardboard tubes may be included with paper recycling.(The cardboard tubes from paper towels may also be recycled.)

    Toilets

    Check with your trash hauler.

    Toys

    Charitable organizations (SISWD reuse centers, Salvation Army, Goodwill, local churches) may take those in good condition. Most toys are not recyclable and, if not in reusable condition, must be placed in the garbage. Plastic toys are not recyclable even if they show the recycling (chasing arrows) symbol. If there is no number inside the arrows, that just means that it contains recycled materials. Toys containing toxic lead and/or mercury may be brought to the SISWD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison. Please call 812-574-4080 to schedule a drop-off time.

    Transmission Fluid

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Trash Compactor

    Considered scrap metal and can be brought to SISWD recycling centers or offered to scrap metal dealers.

    Trees & Brush

    Placing trees and brush in the trash is prohibited by state regulations. Compost when possible. Your community may offer compost collection service. Burning is also prohibited by law.

    Typewriter (old-style metal)

    Considered scrap metal and accepted by SISWD and local metal dealers.

    Typewriter (plastic body)

    Accepted at SISWD recycling centers.

    Tyvek Envelopes

    Tyvek envelopes cannot be put in your paper recycling. However, they are recyclable through a program that converts them into construction materials as an alternative to wood. To participate, turn a Tyvek envelope inside out, so the unprinted white surface shows on the outside. Stuff it with other used Tyvek envelopes for recycling. When full, address and mail to: Tyvek Recycle 2400 Elliham Ave. Richmond, VA 23237. You can also call 1-866-33-TYVEK and ask about the pouch program for recycling. Each pouch holds approximately 200 used Tyvek envelopes.

    Upholstery Cleaner

In some cloth upholstery cleaners, if water is the primary ingredient, dilute well and pour down the drain.

    Used Cooking Oil

    Check www.freecycle.org to see if someone can use it for fuel. If not, secure tightly and put in trash.

    Used Motor Oil

    Accepted in designated containers at SISWD recycling centers.

    Utensils

    Vases

    If still in good condition, vases may be donated to local resale shops such as Goodwill, taken to a SISWD reuse center, or offered at a tag sale. Vases in any condition are unfortunately not recyclable.

    VCR

    Accepted at SISWD recycling centers.

    Video Cassettes

    These cannot be recycled locally. GreenDisk (www.greendisk.com) offers a mail-in option for recycling all forms of electronic media and their cases: diskettes, zip disks, CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs et al, video tape, audio tape, game cartridges, DAT, DLT, Beta or Digibeta, and virtually all other type of computer tapes, as well as many other forms of "techno-trash". See their site for more information. Otherwise, dispose of video cassettes in the garbage.

    Video Game System

    Accepted at SISWD recycling centers.

    Wallboard

    Gypsum board is usable by farmers to spread on fallow fields. Otherwise, take to landfill or transfer station.

    Washing Machine

    Accepted at SISWD recycling centers and at metal dealers.

    Water Bottles

    Bottles that held bottled water are accepted in SISWD recycling centers and by curbside programs. Water bottles intended for re-use, such as Nalgene bottles and bicycle bottles, are not recyclable.

    Waterbed Mattress

    Heavy trash pickup or landfill.

    Weed Killer

    This is a hazardous material and must be brought to the SISWD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madison or saved for special collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Wet Paper

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage.

    White Goods

    Dishwasher, Dryer, Freezer, Refrigerator, Stove, Washer, etc. Accepted by SISWD recycling centers.

    White Paper

    Accepted by curbside recycling programs and by SISWD recycling centers.

    Window Frames (with or without glass)

    Heavy trash pickup or landfill. There may be a disposal fee. Offer to Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity for reuse.

    Window Glass (out of frames)

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage. Carefully package broken glass to avoid injury to sanitation workers.

    Windshields

    Windshields are not recyclable. Landfill. There may be a disposal fee.

    Wire Hangers (scrap metal)

    Not recyclable and must be placed in the garbage or taken to scrap metal dealer.

    Wood Ash

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and may be placed in the garbage, once it is stone cold.

    Wood Preservatives and Strippers

      These are hazardous materials and must be brought to the SISWD processing center in the Jefferson Proving Grounds north of Madisonor saved for special quarterly collections at SISWD county recycling centers.

    Wrapping Paper

    Unfortunately, not recyclable and must be reused or placed in the garbage.

    Yard Wastes/Leaves

    Placing yard waste and leaves in the trash is prohibited by state regulations. Your community may offer compost pickup.

    Yogurt Containers

    Check number in triangle on bottom of the container. #1 and #2 plastics are accepted at all SISWD recycling centers and curbside programs. For other numbered plastics, check the ‘locations’ page to see the rules for your county.

    Zinc Batteries

    These are not hazardous and may be disposed of in the garbage.

    Ziploc Bags

    Reuse, or may be placed in the garbage. Ziploc bags are not recyclable.
